Unless catching really big cats, go with Zebco 33, or ultralight for fun and action.Keep it simple
References :
My personal favorite is the Abu Garcia Red Ambassador 6600CB filled with the original 50# braided Spiderwire. The reel can be found at Walmart for around $60 or Cabelas for about $90 (sometimes they have sales on these for $59.99).
It is a caster reel with bait clicker. The adjustments on the reel is superb where you can cast with little to no back lash (good for the beginners at using casting reels as well as avid users).
Catfishing is my #1 fish of choice and own 6 of these and over the years I found I like and enjoy this reel over all others for catin'. Durable and dependable for the big hogs.
Rod choice is like reels, it comes down to preference of choice of the user. Many good brands and models out there.
I use the Cabela's Whuppin Stick.
Good luck and happy fishing!
References :
http://www.cabelas.com

I personally like spinning reels. cabelas has some nice reels made for them as does gander mt. I would recommend one that has the bait runner option. it makes life a lot simpler when detecting bites and gives the fish ample time to take the bait in its mouth. really helps if fishing for flatheads. these reels are very dependable and affordable. cabelas also has a nice selection of catfish poles they are durable and affordable as well.
References :
the tackle required, would depend on where you will be fishing & the size fish that you might hook into
References :
get a 6-7 foot ugly stik, medium, med heavy, or heavy action. and get a Shimano Sonora 2500. Personally i prefer a baitcasting reel for catfish, more hooksets than a spinning reel in my experience. Try to get an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur with a baitclicker. They are possibly the best reel for the price range. I personally use an ambassadeur 6600 BCX with 20# test line. Have it sitting on a 7 foot abu garcia colonon medium heavy rod rated for 10-25#s
References :
catfishing is best done with a cane pole with your hook and sinker close to bottom, as thats where they stay. Sit still and have patience.
