Many of us here have used a vintage reel and some use them for reasons besides performance. Vintage reels are solid reels but the fact is that parts are hard to come by. Add to the fact the low gear ratio compared to the ones now, vintage reels just end up on a shelf collecting dust. There's nothing wrong with using a vintage reel for everyday fishing, these reels are what made the reels we use today. If you can find the parts for these vintage reels, by all means fish on. If not, it's best to keep it in working order. ~good luck catchin'.
References :
Owned many vintage reels,

I use two Garcia Mitchell 300 spinning reels, made sometime back in the 1950s. Still very good and dependable. I also still use an old steel fly rod once in a while, and it handles quite nicely (gotta watch out for those power lines though, LOL).
References :
it all depends on how you value vintage. if vintage is just something old then go ahead and have a blast. the way that i see vintage is something that is still in good condition and classified as an antique. i have a room in my house designated to nothing but vintage and antique fishing Equipment from rods from the mid 1800s and lures from the early 1900s reels are not as old but the oldest that i have is a peen reel from1940's ish made in america before the company actually transferred to the UK. that is how i see vintage but if you are not into all that stuff. have fun good luck good fishing be safe and remember to share the experience
References :
years and years of fishing and a few years of collection

I often fish with my grandfathers old 5wt bamboo fly rod when i feel technology has gone too far also have some old silk fly lines which i use add a small box of tiny dries and its a great outfit, although casting isn't as good as say my sage fly rod its still a great rod to use and enjoy every few months or so.
References :
If the spinning rod I got when I was 5 counts, it's now 60 yrs old, & I still use it. It's on its 3rd set of guides and second reel, and the cork butt is finally deteriorating, but it still works in fresh and salt water. It's a 6-1/2 foot medium action, and I believe it was a very early Conlon rod.
References :
I'm sure it would be fun for the novelty value, but I wouldn't want to do it all the time. Are you collecting vintage tackle?
