Well, I didn’t make my own lure for all fish, but I did make my own fishing pole. I took a long stick and then used the string from my t shirt for string, and then used a paper clip for a hook. I then used a piece of bread for bait. And guess what? I caught a flounder like fish! =D

You should give fly fishing a try. I can usually catch pan fish, bass, trout and even carp all on the same fly. I don’t catch to many catfish on any lure. You can tie most flies for about 10-25 cents each.
There are alot of really pretty & expensive flys at the tackle shop. They look like they took an hour to tie. most are better at catching fisherman than fish. Most of my favorite flys are kinda ugly and are easy to make. My favorite is an olive woolly bugger.
You can buy a pretty nicefly fishingg outfit for about $30 at walmart. You can get the basic fly tying equip for about $20. Good luck

This is a pretty interesting question as there are not to many people around anymore that actually do make their own lures, although the practice used to be pretty common as the commercial lure selection was not nearly as it is today. I know a few guys on Cape Cod that still do it and they always come out on top, because once you get the basic skills down on carving, and a little painting, you can match virtually any bait that runs native through your area. It’s obviously way to much to describe here, as it is more of a trade then a lesson, but it’s absolutely an obtainable skill that can be learned by anyone with extremely gratifying rewards. Here is a great book to get the basics, this book will put a dozen or so homemade, handcarved, native bait plugs in your box, and you will be truly proud of them.
PS. I still have wooden plugs that were handcarved by my great great grandfather, and not only are they high end antiques, they are, and always will be, part of my family.

I don’t know what the guy above me said but there are lot’s of videos on you tube that will show you how to make lures. In my opinion, I think that the spoon is the most versatile lure around and could be one of the top lures of all times. They have been proven for just about every species in both water types. The variations, colors and ease of use make them a top contender. ~good luck catchin’.
