This helps to keep the line from twisting and lets it lay nicely on the reel. Inserting the line through the spindle before tying it will stop it from spinning on the reel. If there is no hole, tie a loop in the line and "lasso" it around the spindle. Watch closely to see if the line folds itself back over the loop as you begin to reel. If it doesen't, and the line just allows the spindle to turn without catching, remove the line and "lasso" it from the other direction.
