for bass and cats: medium action 6.5 to 7 foot spinning rod ; a good drag on a good reel, also a spinning outfit; 10 to 12 lb test line should be good for both, but if the cats and bass run big, 15 to 20 lb test. (read the fine print on the rod to see the test range for the rod so you can fit the reel and line)
if you prefer casting outfit, go ahead
use an abrasion resistant line: shakespeare big game, spider line xxx, to name two i use.
for cats: use worms, large minnows, stink bait work the best.
# 2,1,1/0,2/0 ,3/0 with enough weight to keep the bait on or close to the bottom.i use an egg sinker above a swivel. and a plastic bead between the sinker and knot to cushion the knot from the sinker. i use between 6in. and 12in of leader to the hook. the same test as the main line.
i use a spinning outfit for bass. same rules apply to the bass; spin vs cast, and the same for the line, rod and reel.
you can get most anything you need at a good reliable store( i prefer gander mt, wal mart, dick's, in that order. you need to go where you trust the store) you need to look for shallow, medium, and deep divers, "rubber worms", top water, etc.
References :
go to in-fisherman.com, bass masters, to name 2, for more suggestions. also, i have fished for 30 years and friends who have been there with me.

You would need two very different set ups for the two types of fishing you described. For the Catfish in the Snake River you will need a much heavier rig. It also depends on how much money you would like to spend as it varies widely. Check into Bass Pro Shop or Caballa's or Gander Mountain for gear to set up for your needs.
References :
A good all around rod and reel combo is a zebco 33, you can get them at walmart decently priced. They are easy to use and maintain. Since they were packaged and set in a warehouse someplace there is no telling how old it is, so I always change the line on every new reel I buy. I have 2 zebco 33's platinum version for my wife to use (but I use them too since I fish a lot more than she does) for myself I have 2 Shimono open faced reels one a syncopate 4000 with heavier line on a heavier pole (good for trolling in the boat and cat fishing) the other I can't remember the name but it is a 2000, smaller and used lighter fishing and casting baits.
References :
Rod and reel are hard to choose from. I always go by the color if possible. I do know a regular size pole works well in catching cat fish. Tackle is by hit and miss. I do know the bate should be stinky. you can make your own with cheese and garlic. I always wear plastic throw away gloves. I do know cat fish can get huge. So until you break a pole stick with just a regular pole. There are so many of them. Also it's so important to have a heavy line. I don't know any of the names right now it's been awhile sense I've been fishing. I have lots of friends that fish where your fishing. We all use just the regular stuff.
References :
Good luck. Tell us about your fishing trip. When you come back.
